Question of the Week

I haven't blogged in what seems like eons, partly because I spend all of my time on school related things, but mostly because I have never had the passion to construct an entire post. To get back into the swing of things, I have decided to start posting a question of the week and attempt to answer it (feel free to comment). Hopefully I can stick to schedule and post every Monday.

Why do people drink (aka consume alcohol)?

While I can’t think of any reason to drink, I can think of many reasons not too.

1. Alcohol is literally poison, it harms not only your liver, but the rest of your body as well

2. You tend to do stupid things when you were drunk, your judgment is impaired, and you lose control of your body

3. Alcohol, in any form, tastes like shit

4. If you drink too much, there are serious consequences including obesity and memory loss

Ironically, many people drink because they see #2 as a reason TO drink. Apparently they believe that they are too “uptight” or not fun enough normally, so that they need to drink to get rid of inhibitions and to have fun saying and doing stupid shit. I have no problem with the latter, but why are people unable to get rid of inhibitions and do fun/reckless things while not drunk? If you really need alcohol to open up, then therapy is always an option.

One thing that I look for in a friend is integrity. If a person does not have integrity, does not always have the same personality, then they have no integrity. Being drunk inherently robs you of your integrity, and makes you a different person, a fact people like to point out after a night of doing stupid things. “Sorry about that, I only liked you because I was drunk.” or “I only said that because I was drunk".”I fought that kid because I was drunk.” The list goes on.

The only reason that I can think to drink is to bond with your peers. I will take shots with my friends as a toast, but that’s about it. However, things involving alcohol almost always ends up with one-one session with the Porcelain King.

Then there are those people who say they only want to get “buzzed”. What does that even mean? Your either drinking to get drunk or don’t drink at all. Sounds like to me that buzz just means you are only a “little” drunk. Why not go all the way? Fuck it. You already made the choice anyways, why not cut to the chase?

I have nothing against people who drink, I just don’t see a reason too (especially after last October). If you really feel the need to get impaired, alcohol is a poor choice, there is more than one way to skin a cat…

Multiple Angles

Most people fail because they only look at things one way. They can’t seem to see things from another perspective, another angle, and so they do not reach their goals. They sit back, convincing themselves that they had the ideal proposition and had the most to offer, when in fact they didn’t. I am keeping this ambiguous on purpose, because it applies to many things (eg. business, relationships, sports) and life in general. Take the time to look at things from another point of view, the more the better. That way you can tailor your behavior to something that will allow you to meet your goals. Sitting on your ass complaining will do you no good. Think of it like a chess match, you must predict what your opponent will do, so that you can always counter. If you fail to do this, fail to do adapt, then no matter how good your plan, it is useless.

FORE!!!

Reuben Hampton: Most Likely to be self proclaimed master of everything.

Does that sound funny to you? Yeah me neither.

That was my “Most Likely To” in my  high school yearbook. It’s clearly wrong. Because I am master of everything…yes I’m actually being facetious, but to make that come true, I have to go back and start practicing one of my favorite sports, golf.

Back in the day I used to play a lot, took lessons as a child and at one point had a pretty decent swing (Driver 280-290), but ,as I lost time and interest, my muscle memory faded. Now that I have a little more time, a lot more interest (I want to be able to play with my friends), it’s time to get my act together.

The only good driving range around Philly that isn’t part of a country club is Tee's. You can find me there, or in my backyard just working on form. If anyone is interested in joining, hit me up and we can make moves. I’m trying to get back in form before I have to play with a one Mr. Magee, so I don’t make a fool of myself. Happy Trails!

I Forgot I Even Had This…

It has actually been so long since I last blogged, that I didn’t even remember that I had one. Thank you google bookmarks.

I guess updating people on my life got short shafted for studying and running. Now that I finally got my lungs working….well kind of, not to the point I’d like, but they are getting there…the little free time I had was consumed by running. My schedule was some combination of eat, study, run, sleep and not always in that order and sometimes missing the eating or sleeping part. Now I am finally a free man and quite honestly that feels weird. I am used to always having to do something, so I’ve just been unwinding for a while. I don’t start work until the 2nd so I have some down time.

Like I said earlier, I getting my body back together, will run with my club this summer, and should be back in shape in no time flat. Its just going to hurt, a lot, but my mind conquered my body a long time ago.

Friend are great, I’m actually in NYC right now visiting a few, shout out to Pierre Lax for letting me sleep on his floor two nights in a row, and for some reason its gets more comfortable every time. Going to bed before 6 AM is overrated.

This summer is going to be a great opportunity. Got some serious learning to do. I’ve finally got some time now, so all of you who I have neglected to contact, hit me up, I’m sorry.

WOW

Yes its really been that long, but I’m back like I never left. And yes I actually did leave. I haven’t had time to do anything but study lately. This is actually coming out of the hour I give myself for lunch everyday. Other than that I have no free time in my study schedule. If you want to see it in all its glory, shoot me an email at eaglehost4@hotmail.com

The only thing I do other than Study or Eat is Track Practice, and if I didn’t do that I would go crazy. I need something to relieve stress, and running is always the best way.

So if I haven’t talked to you in a while, its because I've been really busy trying to get the most out of this education. Hit me up sometime, and when my life gets sorted out, and I have free time, we can hang out. I actually had to withdraw from a class and take it again next year, so I can focus on my remaining 3.5 classes and try to grind them out. I study at least 6 hours a day, not including class time.

Overall its a good experience, and I’m continuing to learn and grow. Just make sure if your going to do something, you don't half ass it, go full throttle.

See y’all in a month! (May 7th)

Enter the Age of the Internet Stalker

See full size image

I’m pretty sure that we are supposed to be in the Information Age. Or something like that. It should probably be called the Too Much Information Age (TMI). In this era of internet lingo (lol?), Facebook (Crackbook), Twitter (firstsandwich), Blogs (reubenhurricane.blogspot.com), FormSpring (Reubz), and MySpace(naw we OffThat), our lives are even more accessible than ever before. Now while there are a few of us who just use the internet as a networking tool, there are others who lay bare their entire lives before the world, including that guy in this picture and, for a lack of better words, put shit out there that shouldn’t be on there.

C’mon people get with the program, its time that you saw these tools for what they are, handshakes. They just simply allow you to meet people that you otherwise might not meet and get to know them, so that you can have an actual relationship with them, one that doesn’t take place on the internet. Itwasnicemeetingyouthough.

Now people, let me get back to work on this glorious two day vacation as I get ready to ace this bio exam. Sledding at the Art Museum was a blast though.

Right On Schedule

Ode to Google Calendar

I love you Google Calendar. I really do. I use you to make my study schedule, where my whole day from 7AM-11:30PM is planned out. I even put in time for eating, sleeping, partying, and just procrastinating into you (though only in limited amounts). I can even print you out and edit you on the fly. You remind me of everything. Thanks to you I will get a 4.0 this semester.

Shootem’ High, Hitem’ Low

May be he was just trying to pick his nose. Maybe he was committing a 15-yard personal foul. Maybe the refs missed the other call where Rodgers was smashed in the helmet with the helmet of Bernard and had his head wrenched. Who really knows.

Regardless it was a great game. As a Packers fan it ripped my heart out and smashed it into a million pieces, as our #2 ranked defense was torn asunder and our franchise QB missed the game winning throw in an all time performance.

“I See You”

I guess it been a while. Been too busy relaxing. Or rather that's what I’d like to think. The closest I get to relaxing is having some quality to time to think to myself. When you've got no one you can be completely honest with, its nice to have a real heart to hear with yourself. The only downside to this of course is that no one really understands how you feel but yourself, so when others make judgments, they tend to be slightly off, or really really off. Can’t really blame them I guess, bad information. Ironically, if you give them all the information, sometimes the judgments they make are worse. Silence is golden.

One of the best part about college really is the break. The fact that you can take a break, and not to have worry about some midterm you have to take after. Unless of course you have to spend time working to pay for college and making sure you have a job for next semester, but its good to stay busy I guess.

People always like to tell me of all these exotic locations they went to relax. I've found that relaxation is a state of mind, rather than an actual place. You can go to any resort in the world, but if your minds not at ease it useless. Here’s my relaxation song, maybe it can help you too:

Guess all I needed was some peace and quiet. I've got some work to do starting Jan 13th. Not really impressed with my grades, you shouldn't be either. Haven't even seen most of the final grades, but despite my learning most of the information, its what you can prove that you learned on the tests that matters. Doesn't help that some professors like to take power trips with your education, but that just an obstacle I’ll have to overcome.

So you want to see my vacation, my relaxation, feast your eyes on this: The Best Show On Earth

More to come. Ill be more steady in the future.
